Have you always had a sense for fashion? Have you always watched a fashion show and thought, “Hey, I can design better clothes than that!” Well, obviously before you can start designing for a designer brand or the Paris Fashion Show, read all the things you have to do before you show the world your stunning collection.

  • Passion-

This might seem obvious, but just like in any career you want to explore. You must have a passion for wanting to do something. This is especially important in the fashion design industry because every single design project that you make requires intense focus and desire to make what you envisioned in your mind come to life on paper. Then to take the drawing, on paper or online, and convert into an actual design takes even more conviction and dedication. So unlike other industries, each project is your own and it will take time, so just make sure you want to do this.

  • College

The next step is to go to college. There are many colleges that offer fashion fashion-design-schoolsdesign programs, but just some of the best fashion specific schools include

  • Parsons, The New School For Design (New York)
  • Central Saint Martins (London, UK)
  • Istituto Marangoni (Milan, Italy)
  • Ecole De La Chambre Syndicale (Paris, France)

Once you have applied and have gotten accepted to your college you will spend anywhere from 2-4 years learning from experts on all factors of fashion designing from textiles to the history and business aspects of the fashion industry. Also, many fashion programs require that you complete an internship as well where you can put your you knowledge to the test in a real fashion environment. And while college isn’t necessary for fashion designers, it is highly recommended as it will give you a jumpstart in this highly competitive industry. It was also help ensure a higher salary and more competitive job opportunities.

  • Finding a Job

fashion-designWhile your first job won’t be as the head designer for Louis Vuitton or Gucci, you can start either at the lower tiers of these companies and work your way up or you can start higher up on lower tier fashion companies. Instead of a resume you’ll want a portfolio, and with this portfolio you want a current and impressive collection of items you have designed to show off your skills, abilities, and works of art. From there you can continue to work hard and even work on your own fashion label so you can gain a name for yourself.

In order to make it to the top of the fashion industry you need hardwork, dedication, and passion to take your dream into a reality. If you have the desire and ability to make stunning forward-thinking fashion accessories then there is no reason you can’t start today. Look at Louis Vuitton, he started with a desire and passion and let nothing stop him.
